BLUES FOR TENNESSEE: MUSIC FROM TENNESSEE WILLIAMS’

NEW ORLEANS YEARS

www.tennesseewilliams.net

11:30 A.M. TOM SANCTON’S LEGACY BAND

New Orleans was a vibrant music town during the 1940s, and young Tennessee Williams presumably drank it in with the rest of the local culture that enchanted him. We can’t be sure that he caught this or that band during his Crescent City sojourns, but it’s a good bet that he heard some of the great music on off er at Bourbon Street jazz clubs like the Famous Door and the Paddock, as well as the pianists and small groups active in hotel bars, not to mention the dance halls and brass bands that played in and around the Quarter. Among the musicians he likely heard were George Lewis, Papa Celestin, Sweet Emma, Sharkey Bonano, Johnny Wiggs, and Raymond Burke. Drawing from the repertoires of these and other players active in the 40s, Tommy Sancton’s New Orleans Legacy Band will recreate the musical ambience of Tennessee’s New Orleans years.

1:00 P.M. EXCERPTS FROM BOUDIN: THE NEW ORLEANS PROJECT

Boudin is a theater project that asked, “How has New Orleans music saved your soul?” After a year of collecting answers from the community, co-curators Sean Daniels and Aimee Hayes devised an only-in-New-Orleans theatrical piece blending stories and music. The six actor-musicians perform dynamic acappella arrangements by Jay Weigel of New Orleans music like you’ve never heard it before, in conversation with their own stories and the responses of real New Orleanians. Aimee Hayes will discuss how the project came together intermixed withselections from the show.

2:30 P.M. SINGING ALONG THE MISSISSIPPI
BRUCE SUNPIE BARNS & THE
SUNSPOTS

the rest of the world.
